The Commute

We follow Ruth Burotte as she makes her way from her Miami Gardens apartment to Swampspace studio in the Miami Design District. The 90-minute commute requires a combination of skateboarding, walking, a bus transfer, and a considerable amount of waiting around.

But Ruth approaches the commute with a fresh attitude and open mind, and uses the time to listen to music and think.

Ruth Burotte:                    It’s really hot outside, so I have to deal with it. And sometimes the bus can be late, but this one is usually on time. I could always predict when it’s coming.

Ruth Burotte:                    We’ve been waiting for about 20 minutes. I’m getting really hot, so, I’m getting pretty mad, but this isn’t the longest I had to wait for the bus. My longest wait was like an hour and 45 minutes.

Ruth Burotte:                    Waiting on transit can be like pretty much of a hassle. I do enjoy the ride pretty much because I can just listen to music all the time and think about things sometimes when I’m on the bus. I listen to a lot of good rappers these days like Princess Nokia, Rico Nasty, and like another good female rapper.

Ruth Burotte:                    I think Kanye … Like, I love Pharrell. Pharrell’s pretty cool, and I like his shoes actually, you know? But something about Kanye’s, like the Wave Runners are pretty dope shoes. I actually want them.

Ruth Burotte:                    I’m getting tired. Finally. And that’s how I get to Swamp Space.
